Seahawks awarded two third-round compensatory draft picks

The Seattle Seahawks were awarded two compensatory picks in April's NFL Draft, bringing their total allotment of selections to seven.

Both picks awarded to the Seahawks are third round selections - No. 102 and No. 106 overall.

Compensatory picks are handed out based on a convoluted formula factoring in the numbers of players lost and gained through free agency the previous offseason.

With the Seahawks losing Bruce Irvin (Oakland), Brandon Mebane (San Diego), Russell Okung (Denver) and J.R. Sweezy (Tampa Bay) and only signing Bradley Sowell and J'Marcus Webb, the league determined the Seahawks deserved two third round picks out of the 32 additional selections handed out on Friday.

An additional wrinkle this year is that compensatory picks can now be traded for the first time. With general manager John Schneider typically preferring as many draft picks as possible, the additional compensatory picks should give Seattle the flexibility to trade down and add additional selections as well.

The fewest draft picks Seattle has made since Schneider was hired in 2010 was eight picks in 2015.
