Baseball's Best Post-Game vs. Twins: Magnificent Morrow
Friday 09-05-2008 10:10pm PT
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brandon Morrow's
first big league start was surely one to remember, as the right-hander
came within four outs of a no- hitter, leading the Mariners to a 3-1
victory over the New York Yankees.
Morrow, a 24-year-old who was making the 101st appearance of his career
and 41st of the season, walked Hideki Matsui with one out in the
eighth. Center fielder Wladimir Balentien then made an
over-the-shoulder catch in front of the wall on a ball hit by Robinson
Cano. Pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit, though, then lined hit to right
field, beyond the outstretched glove of Ichiro Suzuki, to break up the
no-hitter and shutout. Justin Thomas then came in to replace Morrow (2-2), who ended up walking three batters and striking out eight.
Before Friday, the last major league appearance for Morrow came Aug. 3.
The Mariners then sent the fifth overall draft pick from 2006 to the
minors to make the transition to a starting role. Before this, he was a
set-up man and temporary closer this season, compiling 10 saves.
Morrow was attempting to become the second pitcher in modern history to
throw a no-hitter in his first major league start. He was also trying
to become the first single pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the
Yankees since Baltimore's Hoyt Wilhelm accomplished the feat Sept. 20,
1958. The Yankees were no-hit by six Houston pitchers on June 11, 2003.
Derek Jeter singled to lead off the
ninth, the only other hit on the night for the Yankees. J.J. Putz
settled down and retired the next three batters, getting Jason Giambi
to foul out to third to end the game. Putz recorded his 11th save.
Yuniesky Betancourt, Kenji Johjima and Miguel Cairo knocked in the runs
for Seattle, which snapped an eight-game skid versus the Yankees. The
Mariners have won five of their last seven overall.
Andy Pettitte (13-12) lost his fifth straight decision at Seattle. The
lefty gave up seven hits and three runs, and struck out nine against
just one walk. He's now dropped five of his last six decisions.
The playoff hopes continue to fade for the Yankees, who have lost
back-to-back contests and are now 8 1/2 games behind wild card leading
Boston. Seattle broke a scoreless
contest in the third. Cairo led off with a double, moved to third on
Suzuki's single and came around to score as Betancourt offered a
sacrifice fly to center. The M's tacked
on two more runs the following inning. Balentien led off with a single
and moved to third as Matt Tuiasosopo followed with his first major
league hit -- a double to right field -- before Johjima clubbed an RBI
single to left. Cairo then grounded into a force play, which plated
Tuiasosopo. Game Notes
Jeter has 2,515 hits, three behind Babe Ruth for second place in
Yankees history. Lou Gehrig (2,721) is first...Bobo Holloman of the St.
Louis Browns is the only pitcher since 1900 to throw a no-hitter in his
first big league start, accomplishing the feat against the Philadelphia
Athletics on May 6, 1953...Seattle's Adrian Beltre has an 11-game
hitting streak.

KJR's Jason Puckett jasonpuckett@clearchannel.com Safeco Field - It's a big night at Safeco Field as the Mariners welcome the starts of two careers. Right-hand pitcher Brandon Morrow makes his major league debut as a starter as he toes the rubber against Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte (13-11, 4.52). The 36-year old is making his 423rd career start - and his 340th as a Yankee. As for Morrow, he begins, what many in the organization hope is a long and successful career as a starter. In six games down in Tacoma, Morrow pitched 23.1 innings with 13 earned runs, 11 walks and 26 strikeouts. His last start, August 31 against the Portland Beavers, Morrow had his best outing as he surrendered just one hit in six innings. Tonight's start will mark the 101st major league appearance for Morrow. The Mariners selected him with the 5th overall pick back in 2006 draft. Morrow will be on a pitch count around 90-95 pitches. Ideally, Jim Riggleman would like to see Morrow throw 90 pitches and go six innings. Morrow will primarliy focus on his fastball, curveball and change-up. Riggleman Speaks: Before the game, Jim Riggleman talked about the starting debuts of Brandon Morrow and Matt Tuiasosopo. Tuisasosopo will make his major league debut starting at third and batting seventh. In Tacoma he hit .281 with 32 doubles, 13 home runs, 73 RBIs. In August he's been on fire - batting .337 with 22 runs scored, 7 home runs and 19 RBI. Riggleman also said Jarrod Washburn may only miss one start with his abdominal issue - but he's not quite sure. Also, Erik Bedard threw to a catcher in a bullpen session for the first time. However, temper your enthusiasm - because Riggleman has no idea if Bedard will start this season. I'm gonna go ahead and go out on a limb and say we will not see him pitch again. Riggleman Chat: Click HereRowland-Smith Relates: Ryan Rowland-Smith has certainly been impressive in his audition starts this season, certainly making a case to be included in the rotation next season. Now, Rowland-Smith has the pleasure to sit back and watch his good friend, Brandon Morrow, make his major league debut as a starter tonight. This is certainly a huge start for Morrow tonight, because if Morrow and Rowland-Smith can deliver on a regular basis they will definitely be in the mix next season. Rowland-Smith breaks down Morrow's start: Click HereAnother Tuiasosopo!!!
That's right.....there's another one! I don't know how they do it up in Woodinville, but somehow, some way they continue to pump out extraordinary athletes. When is it ever going to stop? Well, Matt Tuiasosopo makes his major league debut tonight and will start at third base and will bat seventh. Tuiasosopo was a 3rd round selection in the 2004 draft. If you remember, Tuiasosopo turned down a scholarship to play quarterback at the University of Washington to sign with the Mariners. Tuiasosopo met with the media before the game today and without a doubt seemed very thrilled, nervous and excited to be making his debut in front of his hometown and the fact that it's with his favorite team. Another frustrating day for Felix

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Dustin Nippert was stellar on the hill and Milton Bradley drove in the game's lone run, as the Texas Rangers edged the Seattle Mariners, 1-0, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Nippert (2-4) surrendered just seven hits over seven frames while fanning four batters to take the win. Frank Francisco worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save. Josh Hamilton went 3-for-4 and Michael Young scored the run for the Rangers, who have won three of four. Felix Hernandez (9-9) was the hard-luck loser, as he yielded a run on seven hits through 7 1/3 frames while fanning three and walking one. Jose Lopez and Raul Ibanez had a double each, the only two extra-base hits for the Mariners, who have dropped two straight following a four-game win streak. Texas took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Young clubbed a one-out single and Hamilton followed with a double to the gap in right, before Bradley offered a sacrifice fly to left. The M's threatened in the fourth inning. Adrian Beltre and Ibanez connected on back-to-back one-out singles before Lopez grounded out to move both runners into scoring position. Bryan LaHair, though, killed the rally as he flied out to Hamilton in center. Seattle was knocking on the door in the seventh inning as well. Yuniesky Betancourt led off with a single and moved to second on Rob Johnson's sac bunt. Luis Valbuena and Ichiro Suzuki were both retired to end the threat. With one gone in the ninth, Betancourt looked like he tied the game with a long fly ball to left off Francisco. However, Marlon Byrd timed his leap perfectly and robbed Betancourt for the second out. Pinch-hitter Jeff Clement popped out in foul territory to seal the deal. Game Notes It was the seventh shutout for the Rangers this season...Both teams each had eight hits...Seattle stranded eight runners and Texas seven...Texas has won 10 of its 17 matchups with the Mariners this season.
Beltre hits for the cycle
Monday 09-01-2008 10:23pm PT
Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Adrian Beltre hit for the cycle during a five-hit effort at the plate, driving in three and scoring five runs in Seattle's 12-6 drubbing of Texas in the first of three games at Rangers Park. Beltre became the fourth player in Mariners history to hit for the cycle, the last being John Olerud on June 16, 2001. Arizona's Stephen Drew also hit for the cycle in Arizona's 8-6 win over the Cardinals on Monday. It was just the second time in major-league history that two cycles have been hit on the same day, as the Tigers' Bobby Veach and the New York Giants' George Burns accomplished the feat on September 17, 1920. Yuniesky Betancourt, Jamie Burke and Jeremy Reed each had two RBI for the Mariners, who have won a season-high four in a row and seven of eight overall. Betancourt finished with three hits, including two doubles and a solo home run. The offensive explosion made a winner out of Sean Green (4-4), who relieved Carlos Silva with three scoreless innings. Silva, fresh off being activated from the disabled list, allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings on the mound. Luis Mendoza (3-7) was drilled for four runs on five hits and a walk while only recording an out in defeat. Starter Matt Harrison yielded five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Taylor Teagarden was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma before the game and hit a three-run homer after subbing in for an injured Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who left with a sore elbow in the fifth. Josh Hamilton added a solo shot and Chris Davis had three hits and two RBI for Texas, which has dropped four of five. Trailing 6-4, Seattle got a run on Burke's RBI single in the sixth and took the lead for good with a four-run seventh. With Mendoza on the hill, Raul Ibanez hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to plate the tying run, and, following a Beltre double and an intentional walk, Reed hit a pinch-hit, two-run single. Josh Rupe came on in relief and gave up a sac fly to Burke before getting out of the inning. Betancourt made it a 10-6 game with an eighth-inning leadoff homer. Beltre later completed his cycle with a triple to the right-field gap, scoring Ibanez, who had singled, before Tug Hulett brought him in with a single to finish the game's scoring. Beltre, who also hit a pair of homers Sunday, went yard to open the second for the game's first run. The Rangers quickly tied it in the bottom half on Davis' single up the middle, scoring Marlon Byrd from second. Beltre got Seattle going again in the fourth, singling home Betancourt and scoring all the way from first when Wladimir Balentien rolled a ball to the left-field gap for a 3-1 lead. Betancourt's sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Seattle a three-run edge. Hamilton was the catalyst behind Texas' five-run fifth, pounding his 31st home run of the season to open the inning. The Rangers then put runners on the corners and Davis singled home a run before Teagarden ended Silva's return with his second career homer, a no-doubter to left-center for a 6-4 lead. Game Notes Silva is winless since June 28's 4-2 defeat of the San Diego Padres...Texas still leads the season series 8-7...Texas' Hank Blalock had two doubles in defeat...In addition to Teagarden, the Rangers recalled infielder German Duran from Oklahoma...The Mariners selected the contracts of pitcher Justin Thomas and infielder Luis Valbuena from Triple-A Tacoma and transferred utilityman Mike Morse from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Mariners look to continue winning ways
Monday 09-01-2008 10:36am PT
Monday, September 1st (All times eastern) Seattle Mariners (53-83) at Texas Rangers (67-71), 8:05 p.m. Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Carlos Silva (4-14, 6.36) Texas - Matt Harrison (6-3, 5.67) (Sports Network) - Young southpaw Matt Harrison makes the 11th start of his rookie season tonight, when the Texas Rangers host the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series at Rangers Park. Harrison faced the Mariners in late July and struggled over 4 2/3 innings in an 8-5 loss, but has since righted the ship to the tune of four wins in five starts, including a 3-2 defeat of Kansas City on Wednesday. In that game, the Durham, N.C. native allowed seven hits and an earned run in 6 2/3 innings, improving his overall slate to 6-3 while dropping his earned run average from 6.27 to 5.67. The Rangers are 7-3 in games in which Harrison has pitched. For Seattle, right-hander Carlos Silva makes his initial start since a stint on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis tonight. The 29-year-old hasn't won since June 28, when he scattered eight hits and allowed two runs in a 4-2 interleague defeat of the San Diego Padres. He went on to go 0-5 with three no-decisions prior to the shelving, including an aborted 2 1/3-inning outing against Texas on July 29 in which he was touched for seven hits and six runs. Lifetime against the Rangers, Silva is 4-4 in 12 starts with a 4.76 ERA in 68 innings. The Mariners completed a three-game sweep of Cleveland on Sunday. Adrian Beltre hit a pair of home runs and Seattle relievers staved off a late push as the Mariners edged the Indians, 6-4. Beltre ended 3-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Mariners, who have won six of their last seven contests. Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez both had an RBI in the win. Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-2) got his second straight win after yielding two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Roy Corcoran walked the bases loaded in the ninth, but got out of the jam to record his second save of the season. In Anaheim on Sunday, Marlon Byrd and Josh Hamilton both hit home runs to lead the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Byrd ended with two RBI and Hamilton one for Texas, which avoided a sweep by salvaging the finale of this four-game set. Joaquin Arias drove in the other run for the Rangers. Kevin Millwood (9-7) won his third straight start by giving up two runs on five hits while fanning seven in 6 2/3 frames. Frank Francisco retired the final four batters to earn his second save. Texas owns an 8-6 edge in this year's season series with Seattle. The Rangers have taken four of seven meetings against the Mariners at home in 2008.
